Emphasizing diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle, Dr. Clearfield was the "go to" guy when other physicians, even specialists at NYU and University of Pennsylvania were baffled, in his adopted hometown of Wilkes Barre, Pa. A Family Physician by trade, with a detour through Obstetrics and Gynecology, (one year of residency that didn’t take), Dr. Clearfield early on recognized gaps in Western medicine, seeing patient after patient failing to get well in the traditional "every complaint has a pill" mentality fostered by "traditional" medical model. In 1984 he tested and successfully implemented one of the first individualized computer generated diet programs (on an Apple IIc no less) and instituted the Medifast Protein Sparing Modified Weight Loss program at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston, Pa. In 1990, a curious combination of family events, a cousin who, after ten years of fertility issues, became pregnant after three sessions, and a chance encounter with a ninety-year old practitioner from the Peoples Republic of China, on a trip back home to Philadelphia, led him to UCLA’s Medical Acupuncture Physicians training. He took to acupuncture quickly becoming the second practitioner in the Wilkes, Barre-Scranton, area, teacher, lecturer and the Treasurer of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. His 1992 treatise "Celestial Stems-5 Element Diet and Exercise Program," was based on Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary laws. His 1995 article “Form Follows Function; The Treatment of Musculoskeletal Head and Neck Disease,” is the model used taught today for all shoulder and neck injuries. In 1997 he chaired the 9th Annual Symposium of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture in Washington, D.C. Dr. C was the fourth licensed osteopathic acupuncture physician in the state of Pennsylvania In 1998 Dr. Clearfield went hormonal, beginning anew with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement as a mainstay. It was Manifest Destiny, or something, that found Dr. C. wandering around the meeting rooms at the Valley Forge Sheraton in Valley Forge, Pa. in the Spring of 2002. A Botox and Juvederm information session was underway, and voila! the Facial Rejuvenation Clinic was born. Integrating traditional injection techniques with his knowledge and needling skills honed in the acupuncture clinic, Dr. C was able to dramatically reduce the pain, swelling, bruising and eye droop occasionally seen with ordinary Botox injections.
